Summary

Brilliant distillations of the strategies of war—and the subtle social game of everyday life—by the bestselling author of The 48 Laws of Power and Mastery

Robert Greene’s groundbreaking guides, The 48 Laws of Power The Art of Seduction, and his latest book, Mastery, espouse profound, timeless lessons from the events of history to help readers vanquish an enemy, ensnare an unsuspecting victim, or become the greatest in your field。 In The 33 Strategies of War, Greene has crafted an important addition to this ruthless and unique series。

Spanning world civilizations, synthesizing dozens of political, philosophical, and religious texts and thousands of years of violent conflict, The 33 Strategies of War is a comprehensive guide to the subtle social game of everyday life informed by the most ingenious and effective military principles in war。 Structured in Greene’s trademark style, The 33 Strategies of War is the I-Ching of conflict, the contemporary companion to Sun Tzu’s The Art of War

Abundantly illustrated with examples from history, including the folly and genius of everyone from Napoleon to Margaret Thatcher, Shaka the Zulu to Lord Nelson, Hannibal to Ulysses S。 Grant, as well as movie moguls, Samurai swordsmen, and diplomats, each of the thirty-three chapters outlines a strategy that will help you win life’s wars。 Learn the offensive strategies that require you to maintain the initiative and negotiate from a position of strength, or the defensive strategies designed to help you respond to dangerous situations and avoid unwinnable wars。 The great warriors of battlefields and drawing rooms alike demonstrate prudence, agility, balance, and calm, and a keen understanding that the rational, resourceful, and intuitive always defeat the panicked, the uncreative, and the stupid。 An indispensable book, The 33 Strategies of War provides all the psychological ammunition you need to overcome patterns of failure and forever gain the upper hand。

Sometimes you need to study your enemy to defeat them。 Read at your own risk, and use with caution。 Not every battle needs to be fought。 Pick your destiny with different strategies and try them out。 Let me know how you get on。

I feel like this is one of the books George RR Martin read while writing the A Song of Ice and Fire books。 I definitely saw hints of Tyrion Lannister in here, as well as strategies used in the battle of the blackwater。 In this sense--that being writing fantasy novels--this book is great, and probably very helpful。 Yet, it's when we enter real life territory, which is this book's main purpose, that things start to get scary。To put it bluntly, this is a potentially really dangerous book to have ou I feel like this is one of the books George RR Martin read while writing the A Song of Ice and Fire books。 I definitely saw hints of Tyrion Lannister in here, as well as strategies used in the battle of the blackwater。 In this sense--that being writing fantasy novels--this book is great, and probably very helpful。 Yet, it's when we enter real life territory, which is this book's main purpose, that things start to get scary。To put it bluntly, this is a potentially really dangerous book to have out there。 Yes, in small doses, applying some strategies here and there in one's personal life, that's fine。 But when you start looking at this through a political lens, or even a warfare lens。。。 this book can do some damage。 In the wrong hands, malicious, malignant people can only get worse。 It's essentially a guide to how to view the world as your chess board, and it has no qualms about using, manipulating, and taking out any and all pieces that are not your own。 It's cold, calculating, and terrifyingly brilliant。 The last strategy is on terrorism for God's sake, and it's not just some random dude's even more random prattlings on the subject either。 This book is full of researched, historically tested and analyzed examples and details。。。 this guy knows what he's talking about。"Terror is the ultimate way to paralyze a people's will to resist and destroy their ability to plan a strategic response。 Such power is gained through sporadic acts of violence that create a constant feeling of threat, incubating a fear that spreads throughout the public sphere。 The goal in a terror campaign is not battlefield victory but causing maximum chaos provoking the other side into desperate overreaction。"This aside though, I have to admit。。。 the writing is really good。 This book could have easily become a typical boring, bland, dry as sandpaper textbook like novel, but it's not。 Robert Green managed to write with authority and formality, but still keep me engaged。 I didn't feel like I was being lectured to, but I still got the sense that this guy knows what he's talking about。 He also used innumerable historical examples to demonstrate his points from a variety of areas of life。 Examples ranged from Napoleon to FDR to Alfred Hitchcock to painters I've never heard of but was still fascinated by。 This mainly had to do with how Green incorporated the examples into the text。Green didn't do the classic summary of an event found in textbooks。 Instead, he wrote the examples like blurbs from an actual story。 He included actions, dialogue, thought processes。 Not to the point where it felt like I was constantly bouncing between a story and a "how to dominate the world" guide book, but enough to keep my attention。 Green also sprinkled quotes throughout the text to further explain, which I thought was fun。 So, yes, this book is terrifying。。。 but it was also really well written。 。。。more

Couldn't finishI tried。 I really did, but, to me, this book was so full of nonsense with its narrow view of how life works that I couldn't waste any more of my time。 Life is too short。 Couldn't finishI tried。 I really did, but, to me, this book was so full of nonsense with its narrow view of how life works that I couldn't waste any more of my time。 Life is too short。 。。。more

Richard

Great stories。 Some of the strategy associations were a bit stretchy。

A deep, dense and excellent exploration of military/political strategy。

It was informative, yet I felt it lacking somehow。 The stories are nice and I enjoyed them。 I would have like to see a more rounded picture than was given。Of course, I could be completely wrong。 Been there a lot。

It's been a while since I read this, but I remember this book being as smart as The 48 Laws of Power was dumb。 Greene really likes Machiavelli, and clearly enjoys the sort of treacherous, aggressive, high-handed style that you see in Game of Thrones and Prince of Thorns。 In repeated interactions with people who aren't necessarily your enemies, that way of doing things doesn't work at all; but the best battlefield commanders are the tricky ones。 It's been a while since I read this, but I remember this book being as smart as The 48 Laws of Power was dumb。 Greene really likes Machiavelli, and clearly enjoys the sort of treacherous, aggressive, high-handed style that you see in Game of Thrones and Prince of Thorns。 In repeated interactions with people who aren't necessarily your enemies, that way of doing things doesn't work at all; but the best battlefield commanders are the tricky ones。 。。。more

Иногда нудно, но много примеров из жизни и периодически они цепляют и открывают глаза на что-то происходящее。 Очень хорошо в результате

Exceptional book。 It entertains, it educates, it gives food for thought。 First thing to note about how good is given psychologist is if everybody likes him; and I guess Robert Greene is quite successful at that, making his reader believe he might become a strategist as great as the greatest of all time。I definitely recommend this book, but neither expect nor aim to finish it fast。

The 33 Strategies of War is more a comprehensive guide to applying strategy in every day life, with important examples from fields as diverse as military strategy, political campaigning strategy, movie directing (Hitchcock as usual) to even tarnishing image and reputation。The insights are given with several analogies, followed by quotes, further examples and reversals of the rule。The only major snag is that the book can seem overly long and provides at times a little too much elaboration, with t The 33 Strategies of War is more a comprehensive guide to applying strategy in every day life, with important examples from fields as diverse as military strategy, political campaigning strategy, movie directing (Hitchcock as usual) to even tarnishing image and reputation。The insights are given with several analogies, followed by quotes, further examples and reversals of the rule。The only major snag is that the book can seem overly long and provides at times a little too much elaboration, with the reader (or listener) experiencing information overload at times。However, the book is on the whole superb, although a little similar at times to the 48 Laws of Power。If one enjoyed the 48 Laws of Power one should definitely consider this, although it is really a further exploration of the same theme。The audio performance is very clear and understandable。 It can seem a little slow at times, but it provides adequate time for the listener to digest。Overall, a superb book, like all with Robert Greene, this most definitely delivers。 。。。more

This is a great book and it's like the modern version of the book 'The Art of War' by Sun Tzu, Not only the strategies could be use in the warfare but can be use in the daily lives for like winning against your competitor。 This is a great book and it's like the modern version of the book 'The Art of War' by Sun Tzu, Not only the strategies could be use in the warfare but can be use in the daily lives for like winning against your competitor。 。。。more

A true piece of mastery。 Robert Greene goes deep in analyzing and deciphering how Great Generals and Leaders used to plan, explaining in detail (and with examples from history with an interpretation for each) each strategy with its benefits and costs。However, half way through, I lost attentiveness since I currently can not see a situation in which I am in "War" where these strategies will help me。Afterall I think there may come a time where we may need them and this book helps you enormously in A true piece of mastery。 Robert Greene goes deep in analyzing and deciphering how Great Generals and Leaders used to plan, explaining in detail (and with examples from history with an interpretation for each) each strategy with its benefits and costs。However, half way through, I lost attentiveness since I currently can not see a situation in which I am in "War" where these strategies will help me。Afterall I think there may come a time where we may need them and this book helps you enormously in dealing with those type of situations。 。。。more

While I did like the snippets of history in this book, it was just too convoluted to enjoy。 The patterns (e。g。 waves, spiders) of each chapter were a bit cringy but more importantly, Greene often would create exceptions to the advice he would give in an earlier chapter just to make it fit with the new theme in a later chapter。 Plus, for those who are interested in its self-help component, this doesn't really seem to fit the bill。 I'm okay with the amorality that other reviewers mentioned but the While I did like the snippets of history in this book, it was just too convoluted to enjoy。 The patterns (e。g。 waves, spiders) of each chapter were a bit cringy but more importantly, Greene often would create exceptions to the advice he would give in an earlier chapter just to make it fit with the new theme in a later chapter。 Plus, for those who are interested in its self-help component, this doesn't really seem to fit the bill。 I'm okay with the amorality that other reviewers mentioned but the lack of consistency is a deal-breaker。 There is also advice in this book that will likely get you hit。 But if you already have it, just read the stories; they're educational。 Not the advice though, as quotidian life is really not on par with military strategy。 。。。more

As a young boy, I have had so many fantasies of war and fighting。 The good versus the bad。 I still remember drawing a soldier with Popeye’s biceps when we were asked who we wanted to be when we grew up。 I wanted to be a soldier。 This books conceptualises who to manurer and think like a general in business and in life。 With reference from The Art of War by Sun Tzu and The Prince by Machiavelli Robert breaks down tried and tested ancient war tactics to modern day life。

Like other Greene's books this is for the insecure man, generally American, or the closet narcissist to justify their actions。 Anyone who sees the world as it is depicted in this guy's books needs psychological intervention, not a self-help book on how to be an asshat。I am going to give some examples of people I've ran across who value Greene's books highly or practice their teachings otherwise:An insecure call-center manager whose job was to convince people to sell magazines to people with deme Like other Greene's books this is for the insecure man, generally American, or the closet narcissist to justify their actions。 Anyone who sees the world as it is depicted in this guy's books needs psychological intervention, not a self-help book on how to be an asshat。I am going to give some examples of people I've ran across who value Greene's books highly or practice their teachings otherwise:An insecure call-center manager whose job was to convince people to sell magazines to people with dementia with a deceitful hiring practice。An insecure player of a roleplaying game who would pay himself silly to amount to a competitive figure in the game。 Would take in game actions personally and pursue them as slights to his real person no matter who benign。 Would pursue any contrary view in an argument as an assault on his person。 Would just constantly lie to big himself up。 Tried to get to people who were mean to his pretend character via real life means。An insecure player of a roleplaying game who had it posted on the game's forums that he had a small dick by a lay。 Would relentlessly bully people who were mean to his pretend character。 Possibly had an ex-alcoholic get drunk cuz they were mean to his pretend character。An insecure ex-friend who after a break up and failing school decided that he should boost his fragile ego by hounding people with mental illnesses。An insecure former acquaintance high on both narcissisim and machievellanism who decided that he should act like a twat and manipulate the well meaning people around him。In summary, it is not a crowd one needs to find themselves in。 。。。more

My fifth favourite of the five Robert Greene books I’ve read so far。 But that says less about the quality of this book and more about the quality of Power, Human Nature, Mastery and Seduction

I agree that this book, as with all by Robert Greene, is a treat to read。 He somehow achieves maximum levels of both entertainment and education at the same time。What also stands-out about this author's classics is the emphasis on production quality。 As the world seems to be putting a greater and greater premium on cheapness, Robert Greene's books are printed in the highest quality: design, font, color, paper quality。 I appreciate these things。 When you create something you care about, you want I agree that this book, as with all by Robert Greene, is a treat to read。 He somehow achieves maximum levels of both entertainment and education at the same time。What also stands-out about this author's classics is the emphasis on production quality。 As the world seems to be putting a greater and greater premium on cheapness, Robert Greene's books are printed in the highest quality: design, font, color, paper quality。 I appreciate these things。 When you create something you care about, you want the best for it。 If Greene is willing to invest this much in the printing, it indicates that he cares。 And when I read a book, more than anything else, I want an author who cares。。。 not about me, but about the book。 Then I know it will be a sincere read。 。。。more
